From Roman through Medieval times, the Joker\/Fool perhaps reached its Shakespearean heights as the jester in aristocratic courts across Europe. Now as I look back I am shocked that I made a portrait of my son wearing a mask before the Pandemic began. I started the portrait of him in January added the mask on the 10th of February without any conscious conception of what we were about to experience. During the lockdowns I began painting small en plein air studies on postcards, exploring the changing light, weather and atmosphere of the Kent coast. This painting grew directly from those observations, expanding their energy and immediacy onto a monumental scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eMy intention was to create an abstract evocation of the sea at dawn, where light erupts across the horizon and transforms the landscape. The sweeping gestures and luminous colour suggest both the immense force of nature and the emotional intensity of that extraordinary period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eOnly four days after beginning the painting I developed Covid-19. Looking back, I realised I had almost certainly been infected while I was working. Although conceived as a celebration of light and landscape, the finished work came to embody something more complex. There is a sense of unseen forces gathering beneath the surface, making the painting feel unexpectedly prophetic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eThe experience changed my perception in subtle ways. For a time, colour appeared more vivid and the world seemed astonishingly sharp. Whether this was physical, psychological or both, I cannot say. What I do know is that this painting marked a turning point. I swim in the sea several times a week in Deal, Kent, where I live. One morning the sunrise was red and so stunning it inspired several paintings. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eHere you can see the red sun rising next to the Deal Pier. But you can also see how it felt to me. This isn't a realist painting, it's not done in situ, but after my swim when I got home. The colour yellow helps activate the memory, encourage communication, enhance vision, build confidence, and stimulate the nervous system.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf yellow is overused, it can have a disturbing effect. For example, too much yellow causes loss of focus and makes it hard to complete a task. Too little yellow on the other hand, causes feelings of isolation and fear, insecurity, and low self-esteem. The white of the blossoms, the blue of the background and the angular branches were the inspiration for this paintings. Sparked by this actual branch of blossoms I saw by a lake. I felt amazing as though the air had a magical spell over me and I could breath in this beauty. Naturally I wanted to paint the scene and the feeling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"small-font no-pad-top\"\u003eAfter I started the painting I was explaining to friends that I had seen this incredible meadow of wildflowers that felt really different. A couple of days later my friends sent me an article in The Guardian about the regeneration project on the White Cliffs of Dover, which includes this meadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"small-font no-pad-top\"\u003eThe Kingsdown Leas is a site of specific scientific interest and lies within the Kent Down area of outstanding beauty. Small tress and shrubs have been cleared to allow the rarer plants and wildlife species to flourish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"small-font no-pad-top\"\u003e\"A well known piece of the British landscape that had become depleted of flora and fauna because of years of intensive farming is alive with wildflowers, butterflies and birds this summer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"small-font no-pad-top\"\u003eSince the National Trust acquired fields on top of the white cliffs of Dover two and half years ago after a £1m national appeal championed by Dame Vera Lynn, it has worked to restore the area to rich grassland.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"small-font no-pad-top\"\u003eThe charity is excited at the results, reporting an increase in birds including skylarks, corn buntings, partridges and meadow pipits. Named Migaloo by the indigenous community in Queensland (\"White Fella\"), at the time the whale was the only documented all-white humpback whale in the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, at the time Migaloo was symbolic of the vulnerability of the humpback population. This series of paintings focused on Migaloo, tells the story of his journey up and down the coast and highlights the possible threats to his well-being.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy move to subject matter about the environment and the care of our planet became important with this series as my concern for Migaloo's welfare grew so did my concern for our oceans. You remember that moment whale watching when you hear the water break and the release of air from the whales blow hole. Your heart pounds with excitement and the feeling of joy washes over you. Then just as you are savouring that exalted feeling the fluke breaks the surface and the whale dives. It’s as though you didn’t breath while the whale was in your sites and then you and all those around you make a noise as all the humans let go of the breath they have been holding, the breath they caught from the whale. In the background, you can see more rocks and one pup swimming towards the others.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI painted this scene with the hope of transporting you back to that moment in nature. You can almost feel the salty ocean breeze and smell the waft of fishiness in the air as you gaze upon the playful sea lions. When Van Gogh painted his flowers he was said to be painting at the manic rate of around three paintings a day, in all states of blossoming and wilting, on the edge of death, grasping onto the preciousness of life. The way these two artists see the world comes out in this same kind of paradox, this obsession with life and death fuels them to master their craft. For Burns these flowers have a life beyond a pleasing decorative object, but a part of this ecosystem, and more like something fundamental to our planet. The koala became an extraordinarily powerful symbol of the non human consequences of the Australian bushfires and, more broadly, of climate change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe koalas in this painting were based on real animals caught in the fires. I was enormously relieved to discover that several of the animals I had painted had survived after being rescued and treated. Others did not. One, known as Lewis, was euthanised because his burns were too severe and his suffering could not be alleviated. Many animals initially rescued from the fires subsequently died from their injuries.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI began \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e\u003ci\u003eAustralia\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e in response to those events. I was interested not simply in making a painting of koalas or of a bushfire, but in using the structure of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e\u003cb\u003egenre painting\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e to address a contemporary environmental catastrophe.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eHistorically, genre paintings depicted scenes of everyday life, but they frequently contained something more: a moral narrative, a warning, or the suggestion that something was about to happen to one of the figures within the scene. I became interested in whether that tradition could be turned towards the relationship between wildlife, human activity and climate change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThere is something particularly disturbing about placing animals within this kind of pictorial narrative. They are participants in events they did not create and cannot understand. The fire enters their landscape nevertheless.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eWhen I originally wrote about this painting in early 2020, the world itself was changing. Human movement had suddenly contracted during the pandemic and, temporarily, pollution and carbon emissions were falling. At the same time, the Australian fires had made the vulnerability of other species to environmental change painfully visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI continued making paintings about the fires, including people and their animals sheltering on beaches while homes and landscapes burned behind them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eWriting about these works can make the subject sound strangely clinical.
