I felt amazing as though the air had a magical spell over me and I could breath in this beauty. Naturally I wanted to paint the scene and the feeling.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI began a large painting of the wildflower meadow and a white house on the cliffs in July. Since then I have been back many times and watched the flowers change with the seasons. Small tress and shrubs have been cleared to allow the rarer plants and wildlife species to flourish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"small-font no-pad-top\"\u003e\"A well known piece of the British landscape that had become depleted of flora and fauna because of years of intensive farming is alive with wildflowers, butterflies and birds this summer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"small-font no-pad-top\"\u003eSince the National Trust acquired fields on top of the white cliffs of Dover two and half years ago after a £1m national appeal championed by Dame Vera Lynn, it has worked to restore the area to rich grassland.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"small-font no-pad-top\"\u003eThe charity is excited at the results, reporting an increase in birds including skylarks, corn buntings, partridges and meadow pipits. Named Migaloo by the indigenous community in Queensland (\"White Fella\"), at the time the whale was the only documented all-white humpback whale in the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, at the time Migaloo was symbolic of the vulnerability of the humpback population. This series of paintings focused on Migaloo, tells the story of his journey up and down the coast and highlights the possible threats to his well-being.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy move to subject matter about the environment and the care of our planet became important with this series as my concern for Migaloo's welfare grew so did my concern for our oceans. They are among the oldest living creatures on our planet, yet their populations can be devastated by human activity. Through my paintings and sculptures I hope to encourage a deeper appreciation of these extraordinary animals and the need for their protection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAlthough inspired by a real humpback whale, \u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003ci\u003eYeah Baby\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e is not intended as a scientific illustration. I am interested in the emotional experience of encountering a whale: the sudden sense of awe when a creature of such immense size and age emerges from the sea. The sculpture attempts to capture that moment of energy and exhilaration as the whale breaches between ocean and sky.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAs I worked on this piece, I became aware that it felt less like creating a new subject and more like continuing a conversation that began with the original painting. The black and white forms of the humpback have been part of my visual language for many years. In a sense, this sculpture feels as though the whale has stepped out of the canvas and into three dimensions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe history of art is filled with animals that carry meanings beyond their physical form. I have always admired artists such as Brâncuși and Barbara Hepworth, who transformed natural forms into something elemental and timeless.
