There is something profoundly different about working one-to-one.
In a world that moves quickly and often values productivity over process, many adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities rarely experience the quiet space required to explore their own creative voice.
In my studio in Deal, I work individually with adults with SEND for two-hour sessions. There is no rushing and no comparison. We begin where the person is. The pace is theirs.
Drawing and painting are not treated as crafts to be copied. They are tools for thinking, decision-making and confidence-building. As challenges arise — what to paint, what colour to use, how to choose the right brush — I guide in the moment. Skills are taught in context, as they are needed.
Over time, something shifts.
Concentration deepens.
Independence grows.
There is pride in saying, “I made this.”
That sense of achievement matters.
Creative work strengthens more than technical skill. It builds resilience, patience and the ability to tolerate uncertainty. It allows individuals to see that they can begin something, struggle with it, and bring it to completion.
In a calm, structured studio environment, art becomes a means of steady progress rather than performance.
I currently offer one-to-one art sessions for adults with SEND in Deal, Kent, with limited weekly availability.
If you are a parent, carer or support worker and would like to discuss whether this might be suitable, you are very welcome to get in touch.
