✏️ Life Drawing with Instruction at the Stephanie Fuller Gallery

Beginning this autumn, I’m delighted to offer Life Drawing with Instruction every Thursday evening, 5:30–7:30 pm, at the Stephanie Fuller Gallery in Deal.

For me, drawing from life has always been the foundation of art — the discipline that teaches you to see clearly and to connect what the eye perceives with the movement of the hand. It is both analytical and deeply human. Whether you’re drawing the curve of a shoulder or the quiet balance of a pose, you’re learning to observe relationships: of light to form, of gesture to structure, of rhythm to stillness.

Unlike untutored sessions, these classes are fully guided. Each week I demonstrate and discuss aspects of proportion, perspective, tone and expression, offering individual feedback and encouragement as you develop confidence in your drawing. Many of my students are complete beginners — others are experienced artists wishing to refresh their skills or reconnect with observation. All are welcome.

Our professional models bring an exceptional presence to each session. The first of these will be Neil, who has modelled extensively for life drawing groups and universities across Kent and London, including Canterbury Christ Church University and Dulwich Art Group.

I studied drawing with Roy Oxlade, John Lessore and John Wonnicott, whose teaching continues to shape my understanding of structure, form and pictorial space. Later, I taught drawing at the National Art School in Sydney, guiding students who were often encountering life drawing for the first time. These experiences have deeply influenced the way I teach — with patience, clarity and a focus on helping each person find their own visual language.

The Stephanie Fuller Gallery provides a quiet, intimate setting for learning. With a maximum of nine students per session, there’s space for everyone to work comfortably and receive personal guidance.

Why Life Drawing Matters

Life drawing is more than a skill — it’s a way of seeing. It sharpens perception, builds discipline, and deepens our understanding of movement, space and emotion. Whether you come to improve your drawing technique, to rediscover creativity, or simply to spend time among like-minded people, these classes offer a supportive and inspiring environment to explore the figure and the act of looking.
