Dancing

Dancing
Bronze, unique, 2005

Dancing catches the figure at an unstable moment between one movement and the next. Balanced on a single foot, with the other leg lifted behind her, she seems poised to move forward, while the open curve of her arms gives the body its rhythm. The pose is not conventionally balletic. It could almost be read as walking or running, and it is the title that tips the movement towards dance.

Seen from different angles, the sculpture changes markedly. From the front the figure appears composed and almost still, while in profile the lifted leg and forward inclination of the body make the movement much more apparent. The small supporting form beneath her foot concentrates the whole figure onto a single point of balance, giving the sculpture a sense of suspension.
