Help was painted at a time when several things in my life had become frightening and uncertain, although I had not yet fully understood the situation I was in.

Sometimes we are trapped in life and can see no way out. Asking for help is OK. We are social animals, and building a new life takes courage, but sometimes it also requires the help of others.

I put this message out into the world. Some people helped and others didn’t. I remain deeply grateful to those who did.

Looking back, I understand the painting differently from the way I did when I made it. The word HELP seems almost to have known something before I was able to acknowledge it consciously.

Help was one of the first paintings in the Metamorphosis series.
