Darkling
Darkling is a black and white horse sculpture by Stephanie Fuller, made in resin and mica. Poised between stillness and movement, the horse emerges from shadow and light. Its title comes from Keats’ Ode to a Nightingale, evoking half-light, mystery and something not fully known.
The horse has long been a subject of art, from the cave paintings of Lascaux to Renaissance equestrian sculpture. In Darkling, that history takes a quieter, more contemplative form. Rather than the grandeur of a military monument, the lowered head suggests reflection, while the contrast of black and white evokes night and day, presence and absence, memory and forgetting.
The textured surface has an almost weathered quality, as though the sculpture has emerged from sea mist or been shaped by time. Between representation and abstraction, Darkling invites viewers to bring their own associations and memories to the work.
Neither portrait nor monument, it offers a meditation on beauty, vulnerability and the enduring presence of the horse in human imagination.
