Renewal
Cold-water swimming is a ritual of courage. There is a moment of hesitation before entering the sea, when the body resists the cold but the mind anticipates what lies beyond it. Renewal, a swimmer sculpture by Stephanie Fuller, captures that quiet pause.
Inspired by Deal’s sea-swimming community, the sculpture celebrates the resilience, friendship and sense of wellbeing that have grown around the sea. It honours the women who have shaped swimming’s history, from pioneers such as Gertrude Ederle to the swimmers who gather on Deal’s beach today.
Created with layers of resin and mica, the figure stands at the threshold between land and sea, anticipation and immersion, hesitation and renewal. It offers a quiet reminder of the courage it takes to begin, and the possibility of feeling renewed on the other side.
