What happens when adults stop making things?
Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, many people lose the permission to play.
Life becomes structured, responsible, efficient.
And slowly, often without noticing, the instinct to experiment disappears.
Not because it isn’t wanted.
But because it starts to feel indulgent.
Or pointless.
Or something that should only be done if someone is already “good” at it.
Art doesn’t begin with certainty.
It begins with very little.
A blank surface.
An unformed idea.
A sense that something wants to be made, without knowing what it is yet.
The work emerges through attention, hesitation, wrong turns, and return.
Not through speed.
Not through perfection.
Not through optimisation.
It is invention.
And for adults, that matters more than it is given credit for.
Making art teaches something that modern life often strips away:
how to start without knowing the outcome.
How to make mistakes without panic.
How to keep going when something isn’t working yet.
How to find a voice through practice rather than performance.
Mistakes aren’t failure.
They are part of learning.
They are how an artistic voice is found.
This is why I’m running an 8-week studio course in my gallery in Deal for those who want to reconnect with their creative practice with structure, support, and purpose.
Each session will start with warm-up exercises to unlock creativity and loosen perfectionism. From there, the course develops into more focused work — building skills, confidence, and a sense of direction. Come for the full course or as many sessions as suits you.
This course isn’t aimed at complete beginners. It’s for those who already feel the pull towards making, and want a weekly space where exploration becomes progress, and progress becomes work worth showing.
✨ The course culminates in an exhibition in my gallery during the Easter holidays.

- Bring your own canvas for your major piece all other material supplied
