Evening Waterlilies

Claude Monet transformed the waterlily pond into one of the defining subjects of modern painting. I have visited his garden at Giverny four times over the past four decades, beginning when I was twenty, and each visit has deepened my understanding of his extraordinary achievement.

Evening Waterlilies is not a reinterpretation of a particular Monet painting, but a response to the enduring ideas he opened up about colour, light and reflection. Water has long been one of my recurring subjects, and in this large canvas the pond becomes an immersive field of luminous pinks, violets, blues and turquoise, where reflections dissolve into shifting veils of colour.

Rather than describing a specific place, the painting explores memory, atmosphere and the emotional experience of landscape. It is about standing before still water at dusk, when colour intensifies, reflections deepen and the familiar world begins to feel transformed.

Like every generation of painters inspired by Monet, my intention is not to recreate the past, but to continue the conversation in my own voice.
