Jolene

Jolene 2011
Acrylic on canvas
137 × 110 cm

Jolene was painted during an extremely difficult period in my life, while my father was in the final stages of treatment for a brain tumour. The drugs he was taking were having a terrible effect on his mind and had made him deeply paranoid. At the same time, I was being prevented from seeing him or speaking to him on the telephone.

The painting was already about emotional pain and distress when, one day, Dolly Parton’s Jolene came on the radio. I looked at the figure and knew immediately that her eyes had to be green. That final decision completed the painting, and from that moment she became Jolene.
