Pond Reflections

Pond Reflections 2019

Claude Monet transformed the waterlily pond into one of the defining subjects of modern painting. I have visited his garden at Giverny four times over the past four decades, beginning when I was twenty, and each visit has reinforced my admiration for the way he dissolved form into light, colour and reflection.

Pond Reflections is not based on a particular Monet painting, but on the enduring influence of his vision. The painting explores the stillness of water and the way reflections become abstract fields of colour, where the boundary between landscape and memory begins to disappear.

Rather than depicting a specific place, it seeks to evoke a fleeting moment when light, water and atmosphere merge into a single luminous experience. It is a small painting, but one that invites slow looking, rewarding the viewer with shifting colour and subtle movement.
