Mixed Media, Resin and Mica

Cold water swimming is a ritual of courage. There is always a moment of hesitation before entering the sea, when the body resists the cold but the mind knows what lies beyond it. Renewal captures that quiet pause.

Inspired by Deal’s sea swimming community, the sculpture celebrates the resilience, friendship and wellbeing that have grown around the sea. It also acknowledges the women who have shaped Deal’s coastal identity, from pioneers such as Gertrude Ederle to the swimmers who gather on the beach today.

Created in mixed media with layers of resin and mica, the figure stands at the threshold between land and sea, anticipation and immersion, hesitation and renewal.
