View from Alexander Palace

View from Alexander Palace by Stephanie Fuller captures the people seated in front of her and the London view beyond, looking away from the palace towards Docklands.

Watercolour on watercolour paper
15 × 29 cm

Painted on location, the work brings the nearby figures into the same scene as the distant skyline. Pairs of people sit on the sloping grass, with trees unfolding behind them and the city rising on the horizon. Their presence makes this more than a panoramic view: it is a record of people sharing the place while Stephanie paints.

Loose washes of blue, green and violet give the scene an open, spontaneous quality. Broad passages of sky and brightly coloured trees contrast with the small, simply observed figures, holding together the sweep of London and the quieter moments close at hand.

The accompanying photograph shows Stephanie painting on location beneath the trees.
